Oregon Natural Desert Association

To Protect:

Greater Sage-Grouse
Redband Trout

States:
Oregon

Case Information:

Over several years we have brought various administrative appeals and court cases seeking to force BLM to protect sage-grouse, redband trout and other sensitive resources from livestock grazing damage in the Bully Creek area of eastern Oregon.

BLM adopted and promised to follow an improved grazing regime after our initial 2001 lawsuit; but monitoring showed that objectives were not met and grazing damage continued.  BLM then refused to follow its own management plan requiring closure of allotments not meeting the standards.  After a fire burned significant acreage in 2007, BLM finally closed some pastures to grazing — but moved the cows to other pastures.  It still refuses to take steps needed to correct the grazing problems, and has even reduced monitoring activities.  So the litigation continues…..
