5-31-23 Voices for the West — Say It, Don’t Spray It: Bringing APHIS’s Pesticides Program into the Light

31st of May 2023

The federal Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s (APHIS) program allowing pesticide spraying on millions of acres in 17 western states threatens pollinators and other insects, which contribute services valued at more than $70 billion per year to the U.S. economy, according to a recent study. Greater sage-grouse, monarch butterflies, western bumblebees, and other species inhabiting western lands are already in steep decline and extremely vulnerable to further harm from APHIS’s pesticide spraying. We’re joined by Sharon Selvaggio of the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation and Advocates for the West Staff Attorney Hannah Goldblatt to discuss our legal challenge to the APHIS program and our efforts to promote more ecologically-responsible pest management.
